The idea for Peter And The Vampires came, strangely enough, from James Joyce's short story "The Dead."

You wouldn't think a kid's horror story would come from a hoity-toity literature classic...but hear me out.

(Spoiler alert for "The Dead"!)

The end of Joyce's story tells how a young woman lost her one true love because he came to her window in a rainstorm, caught pneumonia, and died. Romantic and tragic, right?

But I always thought, "Yeah, well, it's romantic if you LIKE the person...but if they were a stalker, that would be about the creepiest thing imaginable: to look out your window in a storm and see someone standing out there, staring up at your window."

BAM.

I already wanted to write a series of horror stories...and I had settled on a protagonist (basically an altered version of myself at ten years old).

Now I had my first creepy scene: the hero peers out his window during a raging thunderstorm and sees a girl he doesn't like staring up at his window, softly calling out his name: "Peeeeeeeeteeeeeeeeeer..."

Then he finds out something REALLY disturbing.

Quickies!: Semester One Collection

The Quickies! series -- the first four short stories compiled into the Semester One Collection -- is something I wrote because I wanted to explore different things. I'd written some fantasy, some sci-fi, and now I wanted to write something a little more... frisky. I've got needs too, you know, so I only write stories that I myself want to read.

Since I went to college, I decided to write about college kids and all the crazy stuff they got up to. Some of this is real, some of this is exaggerated, some happened to me and some happened to people I knew -- and some is pulled straight from my imagination... or how I wished things went down. Names, places, all changed to protect the innocent and the guilty alike.

That's pretty much it. The first Semester anthology is four stories, all in one, with slowly increasing amounts of kinkiness with a more gentle finish. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I got the inspiration for this novella after visiting Dunstanburgh Castle on the North East coast of England. As soon as I started reading Supervillain I started laughing. This book is a pretty funny book and so I was laughing out loud at parts quite often.

Supervillain, is a pretty good guide on how to become a supervillain. Each chapter presents different information that will help anyone on their quest to become a supervillain. Some of the advice was really interesting and some of it was quite funny.

I think my favourite chapter would have to be the chapter would have to be the one about Superheroes, it was really fun to read and I definitely loved that one the most.

Overall, I thought that Supervillain: The Concise Guide was a fun and interesting little book that teaches you about the ins and outs of being a supervillain in a slightly realistic light.

The idea for this book was born after a night of watching some intellectually limp anime about a good natured young girl was swept away to another land. (There is a tribute to these shameful beginnings in chapter one. Can you find it?) I made some withering comment about how such characters never seem to mind, or miss home. There was laughter and more wine, but later that night I began to think 'what would a normal woman with something to lose do? Thus was born Chiyo Alglaeca.

I wrote three other P.I. books before I wrote Thread of Hope and I decided that I wanted to write about something that scared me. But not something like ghosts or clowns (don't ask) or things that go bump in the night. What was the one thing I feared most?

And that one thing was something happening to my daughter.

So I created a character whose daughter was abducted and never found. Her disappearance changed every aspect of his life and he's haunted by her disappearance and he can't let her go. So as he continues to search for her, he looks for other missing kids. And the irony is that he can find every missing child but his own.

It was a scary, uncomfortable book to write - but it's exactly the kind of book I wanted to write. But never have to live.

VOLCANO WATCH

I thoroughly research the background of my books. Whenever possible, I incorporate real-life experiences into the story. If it didn't experience it, I make it up. Readers have commented on the following two scenes, one from book one in the Forensic Geology series (BADWATER), and the other from book two (VOLCANO WATCH)--they wanted to know if I'd experienced those, um, adventures myself. One scene came from real life; the other I totally made up. Which do you think is which?

Scene #1, from BADWATER: the bad guy is in a slot canyon in Death Valley, having just watched the chaos his act of sabotage caused, and now he's getting the hell away from the scene before he gets caught. He's already jumpy and suddenly there comes a low-pitched roaring sound, from upcanyon. He's desert-wise and knows it could be a flash flood coming, caused by summer storms in the watershed above. And there's no way to escape—the canyon walls are vertical and he can't outrun a flood. The sound intensifies. And then around the upcanyon bend comes something totally unexpected: a black twisting whirlwind of soil and pebbles. It seems alive, snaking its way down the twisting slot canyon without touching the walls. It screams. The bad guy presses himself against the canyon wall and the whirlwind just grazes him as it passes. A flood would have drowned him. This thing spooks the hell out of him.
(Hint: I'm a hiker and I've hiked Death Valley canyons many times.)

Scene #2, from VOLCANO WATCH: the protagonist (of both books) Cassie Oldfield is returning to her hometown, which has just been evacuated under the threat of an eruption. She's returning in search of her partner, who she believes is stranded there. She's returning on skis, coming in cross country via a steep canyon. (I like canyons) There's a sudden low-pitched roaring sound (I like scary sounds) and, in wonder and terror, she sees a slab of snow detach from the canyon wall and descend upon her. Avalanche. It catches her, tumbles her, envelopes her. Buried with only a small air pocket, she must dig her way out. But the snow is like ice. She thinks she'll die. And then mother nature throws her a rope: there's an earthquake, cracking the icy snow roof enough that she can escape. Of course, she escapes into more trouble….
(Hint: I'm a skier and I've skied the Sierra Nevada back country many times, and been caught in some serious snow storms.)

I wholeheartedly recommend this novel, only if you don't mind being kept up by a story you can't put down, or haunted by a character you loathe, but perhaps surrender to root for in the end.

Wow, there is so much to this book, so much to share. The main characters in this book are a half-human, half-fay woman named Magdalena (also called Maggie or Alena). Alena has been on the run almost her entire life, hiding from her would-be husband Cernunnos, an ancient Celt God who wants to use Magdalena for nefarious purposes. The other main character to this captivating novel is my favorite, Ares, ancient Greek God of War. Ares has been exiled from Olympus to an island somewhere near Greece. One day, Ares finds Magdalena washed up on shore and is instantly curious and captivated by this strange woman. As the story develops, Magdalena's past is slowly uncovered, and it is violent and dangerous. As Ares learns more about Magdalena, he also becomes softened to her. There is a compelling heat between them, and they find themselves falling for each other. Before Magdalena and Ares can have a relationship, truth must be uncovered, and the psychopathic evil God stopped.
This story is full of mythology, I loved it. The Gods of olympus are engaging, the back stories told are all developed. The eroticism is heavy, and quite intriguing. This book is so much more than a simple love story or erotica or fantasy novel, there are sub-plots and back stories. The story is told from several viewpoints, from Magdalena, Ares, Cernunnos, even Eros has a viewpoint in there. All of this is done is a way that the story is only enhanced. It is so wonderfully developed, when I finished reading, I was quite satisfied. The entire story was told. I will admit, at times I was frustrated with Magdalena, she was constantly questioning and doubting Ares. Ares, despite being the God of War, was quite ironically the underdog for much of the story. He was hated by most everyone, except for his mother and a few of his women.
WARNING: I do have to issue a warning, there is a lot of violence in this book. There is rape, and beating, and what I would call torture. It is all part of the story, but it was a bit tough to read at parts.
With all this said, the book was excellent. Everything was there and very well written. The emotions went from deep lows at times, to great highs. There was intrigue, danger, betrayal, and great romance. On that note, I will end my review with this, my favorite quote from the book:
"And still I am alone except when I'm with you. Then I am whole, no longer restless, and no longer weary."

Writing mysteries set in the Regency period can be challenging. Forensics and medicine as we know it today were in their infancy and the thermometer used to take a person’s temperature wasn’t widely used until 1867 when Sir Thomas Allbutt invented the first practical medical thermometer. Even then, it took 5 minutes! So establishing the time of death in even so crude a way as taking the body’s temperature was nearly unknown, leaving investigators almost exclusively with their wits and the bits and pieces of circumstantial evidence they could collect.

The Vital Principle is the first book featuring Knighton Gaunt, the founder of Second Sons.

Determined to maintain her independence and social status, Prudence Barnard stretches her small income by being little more than a professional, and entertaining, guest. If her hostess wishes to communicate with the spirit world then Pru is happy to oblige her, even if it is mostly a sham. And it goes well until she discovers her host has hired an inquiry agent, Knighton Gaunt, to expose her as a fraud. Unfortunately, her host is poisoned and suspicion soon falls on her. She is under investigation and that seems to be motive enough according the rest of the guests. The others unite to blame her and shield their own secrets.

Desperate to prove her innocence, Pru tries to persuade Knighton to let her help, but he refuses. Anyone who claims to speak with THE VITAL PRINCIPLE of the dead cannot be trusted. However, nice men are rarely murdered and as Knighton digs into the pas, he finds that many of the guests have much stronger reasons for wanting their host dead. When a tragic, second murder is committed, Knighton gives Pru the benefit of the doubt in order to unveil the real murderer before she, or he, can strike again.

The Story

Recounted from the first person perspective, The Pale Mansion tells the
story of one Arthur Bollingham, an heir to the eponymous estate. As the
young man will soon find out, the Pale Mansion is not just any old
house, and living there might not be as healthy as in other places of
the country.

The Characters

One of the reasons The Pale Mansion came into being in the first place
was dissatisfaction with H.P.L's protagonists. The story endeavours to
present characters with distinct personalities, who differ from each
other and have rather more depth than was a standard for Lovecraft. They
vary in temperament, knowledge and skills, a fact which might influence
their fates greatly :

Arthur Bollingham - an economist in his late twenties, Arthur is the
heir to the Pale Mansion and narrator of the story. He is a
level-headed, rather conventional young man, fond of symmetry and
observing proprieties.

Quincey Hartman - a physician and Arthur's best friend, Mr. Hartman is
much less strict in his demeanour. He likes a good laugh, long walks,
big glasses of port and dogs.

Sarah Noyes - Arthur's cousin, a young lady of impeccable if rather dull
upbringing. She is intent on providing her cousin with company, such as
she might offer.

The Place

Most of the recounted events take place in the eponymous house, the
building itself being placed somewhere in the "Lovecraft Country" we all
know and love. The estate is situated near Providence, Rhode Island, but
excessive landmarking and descriptions have been avoided, on purpose.
The real stage of events is, and has always been, the human mind.

I was a little surprised at how Ami Blackwelder described the dystopian world because it seemed so realistic. Often times dystopian worlds can seem a bit far-fetched, but this seemed entirely plausible and her description of how the Mers' appearances evolved was plausible as well. Seeing as how they are not the "traditional" mermaids, this made the story fresh and exciting.

Mira and Nerin are both very strong characters that you really grow to love as you get to know them. Their personalities balance each other perfectly and you want to see them succeed in their adventure so badly! Mira's hunt for her birth parents sends her, Nerin, and his sister Nerissa into the world of Remnantville, a place where Mers are hunted and killed, their bodies used to make products for the Aristos. The three of them must stay safe, unravel the mystery behind Mira's identity, and possibly save the Mers all at the same time.

Ami Blackwelder's writing is very vivid and colorful. She paints a picture with her words that leaves readers with a gorgeous image of the sea and the creatures inside it. The action inside this novel will leave readers turning the pages long into the night. While the story had a good resolution in my opinion, I can definitely see how the next two books will add so much more to the series. This is a brilliant start!!

Book Description: After surviving life in a violent Chicago street
gang through his high school years, Darnell Jackson's future appears
promising. A football scholarship gives him the chance to escape the
thug lifestyle.

During his first year in college, Darnell safely resides in a small
Kentucky town, playing Division Two college football and trying to
make something of himself. Adjusting to the new surroundings proves
tough, but a teammate and a girl give him hope that his future will be
better than his past.

In the summer after his freshman year, he returns to the old
neighborhood to be with his mother. The gang reasserts its hold on
him, and the leader orders Darnell to kill a member of a rival gang.
Nearly dying in a gang fight, Darnell shoots an enemy gangbanger. This
forces Darnell to re-evaluate his future. As a result, he lies to the
mercurial leader of his gang, claiming he completed his assignment.
After "doing work" for his gang, Darnell receives permission to head
back to school and the security of small-town life.

When the head gangbanger learns of Darnell's lie, the small Kentucky
town isn't so safe any more.
